Beard Care Tips for your Beard this Summer

Summer can be a difficult time, especially for those with new beards. What made perfect sense in the winter may not sound that great as the temperatures start to rise. A beard can actually help keep you cool by blocking the sun from your face which acts as a natural sun protector. Before you decide to shave and undo all that hard work, check out our tips to keep you cool and looking good:

1. Stay Hydrated

Stay hydrated. A hydrated body means your beard is hydrated, too. Keeping yourself hydrated prevents beard hair breakage. We recommend drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.

2. Wash & Moisturize your Beard regularly

The summer heat will make you sweat more, which means more stickiness and wetness in your facial area. Keep your beard fresh by washing it regularly with a Sulfate free Beard Wash and moisturized with Beard Balm and Beard Oil, especially if you’re going to be outside in warm weather. Beard hair is coarser than hair on the rest of your body, so it’s important to keep it hydrated.

3. Use Sunscreen

The sun’s rays break down hair cuticles and drys out hair strands which can make your beard dry and brittle. We recommend using a sunscreen in your beard that is formulated for hair. Sunscreen will help keep your hair soft and smooth no matter how hot and dry it is outside.

Beards can actually provide you with extra sunscreen protection against harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Turns out that beards act as face shields which can block from 50 to 95 percent of UV rays reaching the skin. Studies have shown that facial hair has an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) from 2 to 21. The thicker your beard, the more protection. A beard that is 3.5 inches thick, can deliver a UPF of 21. While stubble can offer a UPF of 2. So it’s safe to say, bigger is better.

Obviously it doesn’t mean you should skip sunblock, it just means a portion of your skin is safer from the sun. Pretty AWESOME if you ask me!

4. Rinse after Swimming

Chlorine and salt strips your beard hair of its natural oil (sebum), leaving it dry and brittle. Chlorine can also damage hair follicles which can stop or slow facial hair growth. So after swimming in the ocean or a swimming pool, make sure to rinse off your beard. After rinsing and drying your beard, follow up with a few drops of beard oil

Did you know Beards can keep you cool?

Most people assume beards make you warmer during the summer months. This is far from the truth. Beards provide some protection from the sun's damaging UV rays and actually can help you stay cooler in the summer heat. If you have a longer beard, this will help keep direct sun off your neck, which in turn keeps your body cooler.

Another way that beards help during those sweltering days is they act like a natural air-conditioner. When it’s hot, we sweat and when sweat evaporates our bodies cool. So as air flows through your beard, it actually has an awesome cooling effect.

Expert Tip: Grab a spray bottle, add a little water and spray your beard when things really heat up. As the wind passes through, it will act like a personalized air conditioner. Wow! How awesome is that?
